Plot summary

Samir works as a sous chef at an upscale Manhattan restaurant, and when he is passed over for head chef he quits. He plans to study French cooking in Paris, but his father becomes ill and he takes charge of the family's Indian restaurant, Tandoori Palace, in Queens. The place has faltering income, two chefs who do not know what they are doing, and only Samir's uncles as customers, sitting at a table playing cards. Samir knows little about Indian cooking. He meets Akbar, a taxi driver who says he once cooked for British royalty in Bombay, and Akbar starts teaching him. Carrie, a woman he knows from his old Manhattan job, helps. His mother hopes he will marry a nice Indian girl, and his father doubts he will amount to anything.
