Plot summary
A colony of iron-eating bacteria is feeding on the Titanic, and experts warn that the decay is irreversible, with the remaining secrets of the liner likely gone within a few decades. The wreck lies more than 12,500 feet below sea level, 380 nautical miles off Newfoundland, and no shipwreck has been examined as closely. A French-American team discovered the ship in 1985. Exploratory missions have gone down to it since, and treasure hunts have brought back over 5,000 vestiges. The explorers who took part describe the extreme dives, the thrill of reaching the wreck and what they have tried to learn about the liner.
