Plot summary
Across the Vendée in 1793, peasants angry at the Republic look for someone to lead their insurrection. They turn to Charette, a former Royal Navy sailor who settled at the Château de Fonteclose after his marriage and has spent three quiet years there. He takes the command they offer. Within months the idle retiree turns into a shrewd strategist and a charismatic war leader, and peasants, women, children, old people and deserters join him and are shaped into an army. The insurrection he leads is part of the War in the Vendée, the civil conflict that sets the west of France against the revolutionary Republic.

- After the film's release, Allociné viewer reviews averaged 4 out of 5; a Libération survey found many came from accounts created recently, and by 7 a.m. on release day the page already carried several hundred favourable reviews. Two online marketing specialists concluded the rating was probably inflated by fake reviews, as with Arthur Benzaquen's Les Nouvelles Aventures d'Aladin in 2015.
- Five historians, including Jean-Clément Martin, Anne Rolland-Boulestreau and Reynald Secher, were consulted but had no part in the script; Martin later asked for his involvement to be withdrawn after the project changed from a docu-drama into a feature film, a request director Vincent Mottez said he understood.
- Two La France insoumise MPs, Alexis Corbière and Matthias Tavel, denounced the film as an 'anti-republican fiction' and a 'falsification of history', accusing the far right of wanting to impose its own reading of current problems, its hatred of republican equality and its nationalism 'of the earth and the dead'.
