Plot summary
London has done away with social housing, and The Kitchen is the last community still standing, which the rich could erase. Izi lives there and works at Life After Life, a funeral service that turns people whose families cannot afford a burial into trees the families can visit. Benji, twelve, has just lost his mother; he sees Izi come into the chapel and asks whether Izi knew her. Izi says he met her years ago and does not say more. Izi rejects him at first, until he finds out that Benji has been staying with Staples, who leads a group of vigilante activists.
