Plot summary
The village sits on rocky ground high above the sea, and its people live off the soil and a few animals, their days divided five ways by the call to prayer. Three children of about twelve stand between childhood and youth. Ömer, the son of the imam, is the less favored of his father's sons and wishes him dead; when the wish brings nothing, he looks for the childish ways a boy might use. He confides in his friend Yakup, who is in love with the young woman teaching the village's one classroom and keeps the feeling to himself. Yıldız studies, runs the household her mother orders her to run, and cares for her baby brother.
