Plot summary
Medine lives in an Eastern Anatolian village, where custom holds that a boy's circumcision must be marked with a feast, and the feast must include oven-roasted lamb. Her son Mert is five years old, and the day for his circumcision is coming. Money is the problem: the family is poor, and a sheep costs more than they have. Medine, 27, will not let the celebration go without the lamb the guests expect. She puts the household to work cutting branches that can be sold, and the earnings are meant to bring the sheep within reach. Mert's older sister tells him that if the family cannot buy a lamb, their father will slaughter him instead.
