Taner Birsel
Biography
Taner Birsel is a Turkish actor who came to acting after studying journalism and public relations. Born in 1959 in Akhisar, in Manisa province, he studied those subjects from 1976 to 1980, then trained in performing arts at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University conservatory in Istanbul, finishing in 1985. He has worked at the Istanbul State Theatre since 1985 and appeared in over thirty productions there, including Hamlet, King Lear, Cyrano de Bergerac, Ay Isiginda Samata and The Death of Danton. He has also made a career in film, and his awards include best male actor prizes from the Turkish Film Critics Association, or SIYAD, among them one for The Confession (2002), which was shown at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section that year, and best actor at the 21st Istanbul Film Festival for A Run for Money (1999).
