Plot summary
Tyler Yim is a restless 21-year-old in Hong Kong who has spent his life unable to win other people's trust. A drunken night leaves Ah Jo, an undercover cop, pregnant, and she wants nothing to do with him. To raise money for her, he takes a job with an unlicensed bodyguard outfit run by Uncle Ji. Months later he meets Jack Chow, a butcher whose wife Ah Hui is expecting, and helps stop an attempt on her father's life at his birthday party. Tyler proposes that he and Jack start a bodyguard service together, and Jack turns him down. Mercenaries from South America arrive and call him Juan.

- Tsui Hark cut Time and Tide down from an original cut of over three hours, which he considered too slow, reorganizing the whole script and cutting many of Nicholas Tse's and Anthony Wong Chau Sang's scenes while leaving Wu Bai's sequences untouched.
- Nicholas Tse turned down the sequel to Gen-X Cops to appear in Time and Tide, announcing it would be his last action film so he could focus on music; he was back in action in Wong Jing's My Schoolmate The Barbarian in 2001.
- After seeing Wu Bai in the Taiwanese film The Personals, Tsui Hark offered him the role in Time and Tide and rewrote the character to be more of a sad loner, matching the music Wu made with his band China Blue.
- Cathy Tsui, cast as Ah Jo, was afraid of dogs and struggled with a scene playing with one, so she was sent to a dog farm where she played with dogs every day to get comfortable around them.
