Plot summary
In a Chinese town, a masked bandit known as Iron Monkey robs the corrupt officials and the rich, handing what he takes to the poor. The governor, unable to catch him, orders his chief constable, Fox, to arrest anyone with any link to the bandit. Wong Kei-Ying, a martial artist and physician from Foshan, arrives with his young son, Wong Fei-hung, and fights off street thugs who try to rob them. Soldiers watching the fight take him for Iron Monkey, and father and son are arrested. To make Wong Kei-Ying track the bandit down, the governor holds his son and sets a limit of seven days. The townspeople, who see him as the governor's man, refuse him food and shelter.

- Producer Tsui Hark insisted on filming extra comedic scenes after director Yuen Woo-ping had already finished the film, delaying its domestic release. In a DVD interview, Tsui said the delay may have hurt the film's box office earnings.
- The 2001 United States release carried numerous controversial edits and changes made by Miramax, which the company hoped would make the film more marketable to American audiences, and which dismayed Hong Kong cinema fans.
- The film is a fictionalised account of an episode in the childhood of the Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hung, following him and his father Wong Kei-ying as they encounter the Iron Monkey.
