Plot summary
By September 1971, recruits are arriving at Fort Polk, Louisiana, for advanced infantry training ahead of Vietnam. Captain Saunders tells the men that everyone who passes through the post is bound for the war and that their political views do not matter. Roland Bozz, a draftee who chafes at authority, hunts for loopholes that can get soldiers discharged, among them Cantwell, who has children and a disabled wife, and Miter, who is overwhelmed by the training. Jim Paxton, a volunteer and an aspiring writer, keeps a journal of what he sees. Bozz's leadership wins him the post of platoon guide, while Private Wilson, a racial bigot, belittles Miter and Bozz and turns against them.
