Chuck Berry
Biography
Chuck Berry was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, a pioneering figure in rock and roll who was often called the Father of Rock and Roll. Born in St. Louis, he gave his first public performance while a student at Sumner High School. His break came in 1955 when he traveled to Chicago, met Muddy Waters, and recorded Maybellene for Chess Records, an adaptation of Ida Red that sold over a million copies and reached the top of Billboard's rhythm and blues chart. He became known for songs including Roll Over Beethoven, Rock and Roll Music and Johnny B. Goode. Berry appeared in the films Rock Rock Rock! (1956), Jazz on a Summer's Day (1959) and Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll (1987). He was among the first musicians inducted when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in 1986, and he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2000.
