Plot summary
A phone call from Prague ends Ann's relationship: her boyfriend tells her he no longer loves her and wants to break up. She drinks a bottle of nail polish remover and ends up in the hospital; after she leaves it, a psychiatrist passes along a crisis help line's phone number. One evening she dials and reaches Don, a real estate salesman who volunteers on the line. They connect, but she hangs up when he admits he does not know what love is. Ann, who works in a photo store in a small Pacific Northwest town, begins taping messages for her boyfriend about how lonely she feels and gives them to a neighbor who has a package delivery job to send to Prague.
