Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's subject, the art dealer Charles Augustus Howell, was a real man: born in Porto in 1840 to an English father and a Portuguese mother, he left Britain in 1858 just before his friend Felice Orsini tried to assassinate Napoleon III, fueling rumors that he was part of the conspiracy.
- Howell earned his notoriety by persuading the poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti to dig up the handwritten poems Rossetti had buried with his wife, the painter and poet Elizabeth Siddal, so that Howell could sell them.
SPOILER
The real Howell died in mysterious circumstances: his body was found on 21 April 1890 outside a brothel in the Chelsea district with his throat cut and a coin in his mouth, and compromising letters from prominent people found in his house suggested murder.- Howell's bad reputation was such that Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by him for his Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton.
- The film's shooting took place in Portugal, and the country also served as the backdrop for the film's late Victorian London setting.
