Plot summary
Steve Karamitsis is a first-generation Greek Australian without a job, getting by on favors for the people around him. His most treasured possession is a dark blue 1969 Chrysler VF Valiant hardtop his father gave him. While helping Theo, a neighbor with an eye on an insurance payout, Steve has a minor car accident that involves Raelene Beagle-Thorpe, the Minister for Employment. Two things come of it: Steve meets Celia O'Brien and is drawn to her at once, though she dislikes him on sight, and a television report names him Australia's worst dole bludger. Steve wants to keep his friend Frank away from Annie, Celia's younger sister, and to keep Frank's cousin Domenic clear of Tony, a crime lord Domenic owes money to.
