Plot summary
February has frozen the sea in a small Scottish coastal village. Frances, a photographer, is recently widowed and withdrawn, and her sixteen-year-old son Alex looks after them both. She is considering a move to Australia to escape any memory of her husband. Her mother Elspeth arrives without warning, and while she tries to learn whether Frances means to go, she wants to be sure her daughter still needs her. Alex meets Nita, a girl newly arrived in the village. Chloe and Lily, two old women, attend the funeral of someone they never knew. Sam and Tom, verging on puberty, skip school and spend the day on the frozen beach.
