Plot summary
In London before the First World War, Arthur Winslow, a banker, is preparing a family dinner to seal the engagement of his daughter Catherine to Captain John Watherstone. His youngest son Ronnie, a cadet at Osborne, comes home early: the college says he stole a postal order. Ronnie says he is innocent, and his father believes him. Because the college will not take the boy back, Arthur looks for a way to clear his son's name and asks Sir Robert Morton, a barrister and Member of Parliament, for help.
