Plot summary
Jennifer Harris, an Australian fugitive, has been working as a nanny in Amsterdam until her employer, Mr. de Vries, discovers who she is. She talks her way onto a tour bus leaving the city, joining a group of strangers: Douglas West and his young son Curt, doctor Nicholas Cooper, photographer Ruby Rousseau, soldier Jackson, and Takashi Kido, a Japanese visitor honoring his grandmother. Abe, the driver, takes them into the countryside. When Jennifer sees her dead father in the road, she makes Abe stop, and the bus will not start again. She and Jackson walk toward a nearby windmill for help; the others wait with Curt, who has cut himself and is a hemophiliac. Nicholas doubts her account of what happens in the woods.
