Plot summary
Policeman Edward Malus receives a letter from Willow Woodward, his former fiancée, who left him years earlier without explanation. She writes that Rowan, her daughter, has disappeared and asks for his help. Edward travels to Summerisle, a private island in Puget Sound, where Willow lives among a community of neo-pagans. The islanders grow fruit and produce honey, and they answer his questions about Rowan evasively. Sister Summersisle, the elderly woman who leads them and represents the goddess they worship, tells Edward that her ancestors left England to escape persecution, settled near Salem, and later came to the island. Their population is predominantly female, she says.
