Plot summary

In a Polish family that takes in lodgers, teenage Ewa Pobratyńska is warned at confession against impure thoughts and feelings. Adolf Horst is one of the lodgers. Łukasz Niepołomski moves into the house, and the two fall in love. He is married and wants a divorce from his previous wife, but the local church people refuse him. Wounded in a duel, he lives with Ewa while he recovers, and then he leaves for Rome to seek the divorce. Ewa travels around Europe in search of Łukasz, and the men she meets along the way each have their own plans for her.
