Plot summary
A family of four leaves the civilized world and settles on an island, where they live cut off from reality. The parents raise their two adolescent children in self-sufficiency and minimalism, and the father, as head of the household, teaches them survival skills and sets the rules the others follow. Their rituals bind them into a small community, but rivalry and rebellion soon disturb the peace and the balance of power shifts. Fear grows as another winter approaches and food and water may run scarce. The mother, longing for the world she left behind, decides to return to it, against the father's wish.
