Plot summary
It is 1973. Jonah the Earth Prophet leads a commune whose compound sits over a vortex, and he speaks for the Earth. Voices from that vortex carry the Earth's will to the family, as his followers call themselves. They have signed on for a term of service to the vortex, and to Jonah, hoping for eternal energy and an afterlife of positive karma. Frustration grows as they fight their human urges, the nature they came to be one with. Their days hold unsettling rituals and brutal tests of faith, plus meetings of music and dance, all offered as sacrifice. Outsiders who want to join the family are drawn in, though not all of them are destined to belong.
