Plot summary
Becca and Tyler live in Philadelphia. Their mother is divorced and leaves for a cruise with her boyfriend, sending the children to stay with grandparents she has not seen in fifteen years, since they opposed her marriage. The boy and girl have never met the couple and bring cameras to record a documentary of the trip. Nana and Pop Pop meet them at the train station and drive them to an isolated farmhouse in Pennsylvania. The children are told to stay out of the basement and to remain in their room after 9:30 at night. Pop Pop says Nana sundowns when the sun sets; Nana says Pop Pop cannot control his bladder. Tyler films Pop Pop in the shed, where he finds a pile of soiled adult diapers.

- After The Last Airbender and After Earth failed critically, M. Night Shyamalan funded The Visit himself, borrowing $5 million against his home, and shot the film in 30 days.
- Thousands of American children auditioned for the lead roles of Becca and Tyler, but Shyamalan cast two relatively unknown Australian actors, Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould, in what he called a "total fluke".
- Every Hollywood studio passed on the rough cut of The Visit, and Shyamalan feared he would lose the millions he had invested in it.
- Shyamalan kept a list of the Hollywood executives who had refused to distribute The Visit, saying in 2018 that most of them had since lost their jobs.
