Plot summary
Phyllis meets Paul Hochen in a bar. He is a rich vintner from Napa Valley, and she marries him soon after. He is away from home often, and during his absences she begins an affair with a local rodeo rider. One night his elderly mother believes a burglar is getting into the house and telephones the police. Phyllis takes that as a chance to kill her husband and put the blame on the burglar.

- Diana Dors made no more films for RKO after The Unholy Wife and later sued the studio for defamation of character, claiming $1,275,000. She settled out of court for $200,000.
- Shelley Winters was a leading contender for the female lead of The Unholy Wife, but in July 1956 the role went to Diana Dors under a long-term RKO contract. It was Dors's second American film, after I Married a Woman.
- Ethel Barrymore was signed to play Diana Dors's mother-in-law, her first film in two years, but dropped out because she feared the heat of the Napa Valley location shoot. Beulah Bondi replaced her.
