Plot summary
Since inheriting his grandfather Red Stevens' trust, Jason Stevens has run the Stevens Foundation. He means to propose to Alexia, but a notice arrives: his aunts and uncles are suing for control of the foundation. Caught up in the fight and in the pursuit of his wealth, Jason gives Alexia no time to tell him her own news, that she has decided to spend six months as a disaster nurse in Haiti. She leaves a note, and Jason reads of her departure. He turns to Mr. Hamilton, his grandfather's friend and lawyer, for advice. Mr. Hamilton tells him Red Stevens kept a personal journal and urges Jason to read it. The journal opens the story of Red Stevens' own life and his rise from poverty to wealth.
