Plot summary

Vincent, who works in real estate and is expecting a child, sits down to dinner at the home of his sister Élisabeth and her husband Pierre. Claude, a trombonist with Radio France's orchestra and a friend of all three since childhood, is there too, and Vincent's wife Anna is delayed by a business meeting. Vincent is a wealthy businessman, Pierre a university professor, Élisabeth a high school literature teacher. To pass the time before the meal, Vincent pretends that his unborn son will be called Adolphe, after a French literary hero. Pierre hears an echo of Adolf Hitler and objects, and the practical joke turns into a quarrel. Vincent admits the joke to Claude, while Élisabeth, occupied with the cooking, misses most of it.
