Plot summary
Peter O'Neil suffers a heart attack and crashes his car into the trunk of the giant Moreton Bay fig tree beside the family house at the edge of a small country town. He dies, and his wife Dawn is left grieving with four children to raise: three boys and a girl. Simone, who is eight, tells her mother a secret: she believes her father speaks to her from the tree's leaves and has returned to watch over the family. Dawn takes comfort in the idea and begins to believe it herself; like her daughter, she spends time up in the tree.

- The Moreton Bay fig that stars in the film is the real Teviotville Tree in Queensland: it has a 34 m spread, stands 20 m high and measures 2.31 m in diameter at its narrowest point, and its unpruned low branches touch the ground when heavy with fruit, which is very rare for the species.
- The Tree had its send-off at Cannes on 23 May 2010, closing the festival right after the awards ceremony, and the audience responded with a seven-minute standing ovation.
