Plot summary
In 1930s Austria, Maria prepares to take her vows as a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, and the abbess there sends her to the household of Baron von Trapp, a war hero of the Austro-Hungarian Navy and a widower with seven children. The baron is strict and runs his home the way he once ran a submarine in World War I, and he has set down orders for his household. The children were unruly before Maria came; she lets them play games as other children do and teaches them to sing. Her way of caring for them goes against the orders he gave.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Trapp Family (1956)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Maria von Trapp signed away the rights to her life story after being told German law barred royalty payments to non-German citizens; the law did not exist, and she accepted a single payment of $9,000.
- Paramount Pictures planned an English-language version of the story with Audrey Hepburn as Maria, then dropped its option, and its director Vincent Donehue proposed the material instead as a stage musical for Mary Martin.
- The stage version's producers asked Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for one song; the composers felt traditional Austrian folk songs and their own style would not mix, and wrote a new score for the whole show instead.
- The Trapp Family, one of the most successful German films of the 1950s, inspired the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music and its 1965 film version.
- Maria von Trapp wrote her 1948 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers to promote her family's singing group after her husband Captain von Trapp died in 1947; when Hollywood producers wanted only the title, she refused, wanting her whole story told.
