Plot summary
Ossi plays poker and smokes and chats with strange men in the street, to the dismay of her uncle and her governess. When her uncle departs for a new job, she expects a freer life, but the guardian who takes his place, Dr. Kersten, is strict. Kept mostly at home under rules she dislikes, Ossi dresses in a young man's clothes and slips out to see the city. As a man she is treated less gently than she is as a woman, and the masquerade has its own disadvantages. She plans to go to a grand ball in the same disguise.
