Plot summary
In 1941, a rogue officer named Benjamin Hoffman steals an occult book that is said to hold ancient rituals able to bring inanimate objects to life. The SS gives chase, and its colonel wants that power for Hitler's war machine. Hoffman leaves the book in Rosenheim, a remote village, where it comes into the hands of a reclusive toymaker. Using the rituals, the toymaker animates several of his dolls and wooden toys, among them a doll called Robert that becomes the workshop's guardian. When the SS tracks the book to the toyshop, officers move in to search the premises.
