Plot summary

Jonathan Merrick has made his name as a writer and a scholar. He falls under the spell of Ligeia, a woman whose beauty holds him, and who is fighting a fatal illness she refuses to accept. Death is her enemy, and to hold it off she steals the souls of other people. She wants immortality. For her work she needs Jonathan, and she tricks him into supporting it. He breaks apart from Rowena, the woman he was going to marry. He is pulled into Ligeia's dark, mysterious world. The two of them settle in an old manor beside the Black Sea.
