Plot summary
It is 1937 in Vienna. Austria is on the eve of annexation into Nazi Germany. Franz Huchel is young and inexperienced when he takes a job as an apprentice at a small tobacco shop in the city. The shop is run by Otto Trsnjek, a mutilated war veteran. Among the regular customers is the psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, a man who becomes a valuable friend to Franz in times of chaos and uncertainty. Serving behind the counter, Franz learns about both the joys and the hardships of life.
