Kurt and Theo, pupils in Stalinstadt in East Germany, travel secretly to a cinema in West Berlin, where a newsreel shows them the Hungarian uprising against the Soviets. They return and bring some classmates to Edgar's home, the great-uncle of their classmate Paul, to hear RIAS, a radio station broadcasting from West Berlin. Kurt wins most of the class over to holding a silent tribute before lessons for the victims in Hungary. Their teacher is upset by it, and the pupil Erik calls the gesture a protest.
