Plot summary
In 18th-century Joseon, King Yeongjo rules and his son, Crown Prince Sado, is heir to the throne. The king takes a close interest in the boy's education, expects him to master the texts set before him, and treats him as a rebellious student when memorization goes badly and Sado would rather paint and keep company. Made a substitute king, Sado governs firmly, and nobles who profited under the elder king object to his rulings. The king tells him to decide less and let the nobles lead; when Sado defers, the king overturns their rulings anyway and mocks him for being unable to govern independently. Sado's mother pleads with the king to spare her grandson from the punishment that falls on her son.
