Plot summary
In Joseon, the king has no child and no queen. His stepmother, once a concubine to the previous ruler, has no blood tie to him and schemes to place her own young son, Sung-won, on the throne in his place. The timid prince takes no interest in her plans and instead becomes drawn to Hwa-yeon, an aristocrat's daughter, though many women are available to him. Hwa-yeon loves Kwon-yoo, a low-born commoner, but her father is duty-bound to send her into the royal household as a concubine. The two try to run away instead and are seized after a night together; Hwa-yeon goes into the palace so that Kwon-yoo's life is spared.
