Plot summary
Jessica Burns says she has psychic powers, and she lives at a California dude ranch belonging to her aunt, Flavia McIntyre. When she is asked to dowse for a groundwater spring, she finds something else: a box that has been buried since the 16th century. Flavia takes it back to the house and, convinced it holds treasure, wants it opened immediately. Gordon Hawthorne, a ranch guest who has taken an interest in Jessica, says the box should stay intact so it can be appraised, and he goes to fetch an archaeologist. The foreman, Boyd, who also expects treasure, talks Mike, the handyman, into opening the cask. What it holds is the head of Gideon Drew, put to death for sorcery four hundred years before, and the head wakes and seizes control of Mike.
