Plot summary
Dex is a beer-bellied kindergarten teacher in his early thirties whose rules for picking up women, which he calls the Tao of Steve, come from the cool he admires in Steve McQueen: show no desire, do something heroic, then retreat. His days run on a part-time job with children, beer with his friends, Frisbee golf, pool, poker and his dog Astro. At a ten-year college reunion he runs into Syd, a woman he dated back then and cannot place. She has not forgotten him, and she is not impressed by his approach. Dex works his system on her, and her immunity to it leaves him questioning the belief he has built his life around.

- After finishing film school at New York University, director Jenniphr Goodman returned to her childhood hometown of Santa Fe and shared a house with a friend from college who, much like his fictional counterpart in the film, was an overweight kindergarten teacher who nevertheless managed to sleep around, including with two of Goodman's own friends.
- Pre-production had begun in New Mexico when the start date was pushed back because the actor the film-makers wanted for the lead turned out to be unavailable. The delay was fortuitous: cinematographer Teo Maniaci had given the script to Anthony Bregman, and Bregman and his employer Good Machine came aboard as producers.
