Plot summary
The Covellis and the Marchettis, two families from Rome, spend the Christmas of 1983 in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Covellis appear refined and well off, although some of their behavior hints at a parvenu background, and the household consists of parents, two sons and a daughter. The Marchettis are coarser and lower-middle-class; the father is a butcher. Mario Marchetti and the younger Covelli son both follow A.S. Roma and have come to know each other at matches, a friendship that brings the two families into contact. Samantha, Roberto Covelli's American girlfriend, gets little of his attention, and Mario, who has little money, courts her. Billo, a pianist, meets Ivana, the wife of the wealthy Donatone, with whom he once had a fling.
