Plot summary
Sandro, a Roman, is in Venice for the Carnival, and his sixteen-year marriage to Laura has come apart. He is spontaneous and lively, while Laura, a Venetian, is cultivated and composed, and the two can no longer live together. After one more argument, Sandro leaves her and takes refuge at the house of a painter friend. Among the many canvases there he notices one showing a naked woman who looks uncannily like Laura. He does not know whether the woman in the painting is his wife or someone else, or what the disguises of the Carnival leave of the truth.
