Plot summary
Airline pilot David Keller walks away from a Boeing 747-200 crash in Adelaide, Australia with barely a scratch, while all 300 passengers on board die. He has no memory of the disaster and begins to experience strange supernatural visions. As investigators search for a cause, strange deaths begin happening around the city. A clairvoyant named Hobbs, who witnessed the crash from the ground, approaches Keller and says the victims' spirits have contacted her. Although he is skeptical, he is pulled into her effort to unravel what happened. Hobbs insists her psychic ability offers the only way to understand the doomed plane.

- Antony I. Ginnane had Brian Trenchard-Smith cut a ten-minute promotional reel to lure buyers at the Milan Film Market before the film was finished; because Jenny Agutter began work past the cut-off date for using dailies, Trenchard-Smith shot his own material with her exclusively for the reel.
- Before filming, David Hemmings and Antony I. Ginnane debated whether The Survivor should be gory or more cerebral in the vein of The Innocents (1961); they chose cerebral, a choice Ginnane later called a mistake.
