Plot summary
A British silk merchant is arrested on espionage charges, and military police keep watch on Yusaku Fukuhara, who runs an import-export business in Kobe in 1940. Taiji, a childhood friend of Satoko who now leads a military police unit, warns him that his Western clothing, imported goods and dealings with foreigners have drawn suspicion. Satoko plays a thief in an amateur heist film alongside Yusaku's nephew Fumio. After the New Year, Yusaku and Fumio take a short buying trip to Manchuria for cheap medicine and other goods; the journey runs two weeks longer than planned, and they come home with a woman, Hiroko Kusakabe, of whom Yusaku says nothing to Satoko. Fumio then announces he is leaving the business to write about his time there before he is drafted.
