Plot summary
On the sixtieth anniversary of the sinking of the battleship Yamato, Makiko Uchida arrives at a port in Kagoshima looking for a boat to carry her to the coordinates where the ship went down, and the fishing cooperative turns her away. She meets Katsumi Kamio, captain of the Asukamaru, and tells him she is the adopted daughter of Mamoru Uchida, a petty officer he served with and believed lost. Kamio agrees to take her, with Atsushi, his teenage apprentice, aboard. As the boat crosses, Kamio remembers his own service: in the spring of 1944 he was a teenage cadet assigned to the Yamato, drilled by veteran petty officers who had been aboard since the ship's launch.

- Yamato's production spent about JPY 600 million building a 1:1 scale set of the battleship's forward section and portside anti-aircraft guns; the starboard side, aft section and the barrels of the A turret were never built because the film only needed port-side scenes.
- Compliance issues under Japan's Building Standards Act stopped the filmmakers from reproducing the Yamato's pagoda tower, so photographs of the Yamato Museum's own 1:10 scale model were used for post-production instead.
- The full-size set was opened to the public on 17 July 2005 and about one million people visited before it closed on 7 May 2006; it was dismantled that June, its gun replicas went to the Yamato Museum and the city of Onomichi kept the props and costumes.
