Trailer

Plot summary

A serial killer the newspapers call Stoneman has claimed five victims among Bombay's footpath dwellers, and the police show little interest. Suspended sub-inspector Sanjay Shelar, who lost his post over a death in custody, sees the case as his way back into the force. With quiet backing from his senior AIG Satam, he gathers case files through the constable Kamble and sets up a private investigation room. The killings happen at night along the Harbor line between Sion and Matunga, on Saturdays or Tuesdays, with vermilion smeared on the bodies. Inspector Kedar Phadke, the official investigator, clashes with Sanjay while pursuing the case separately. Sanjay's wife Manali believes he is having an affair.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Stoneman Murders (2009)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Stoneman Murders draws on a real case: the victims were footpath dwellers in Bombay, stoned to death in their sleep, and the killer was never caught. The film weaves fiction around reality to answer questions about the case.
  • The production team had to recreate 1980s Bombay by covering half a kilometre of pavement with black tarpaulin sheets for wide shots, since the era's pavements were black tar rather than today's multi-coloured jigsaw tiles.
  • Director Manish Gupta and his team visited nearly all the known murder sites before shooting, among them the area around Tilak Hospital in Sion, the Gandhi Market near King's Circle, outside Matunga police station, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road in Wadala and a street in Lalbaug. The late-night visits let them absorb the eerie ambience, later recreated in the film's locations and photography.
