Shalini, a depressed housewife, attempts suicide; her ten-year-old daughter Kali interrupts her. She calls her husband, DCP Shoumik Bose, to ask for money, and he refuses. Kali's biological father Rahul, a struggling actor, takes the girl to a work assignment, and she stays in the car while he waits for his casting director. Rahul's agent Chaitanya arrives and says Kali is not in the car, and the two hurry back to find her gone. At the police station, Inspector Jadhav wants to know why Rahul had his daughter with him. Rahul explains that he gets to see Kali only on Saturdays. Bose has Shalini's phone tapped and hears her talking with Rakhee, a B-grade film actress, then arrives at the station, beats Chaitanya and accuses Rahul of the kidnapping.

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ugly (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Anurag Kashyap shot Ugly without giving his lead actors a script, briefing them on the day while the camera kept rolling, and the cast only learned what the film was about when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • While researching kidnapping cases with Amit Pathak, head of Lucknow's Special Task Force, Anurag Kashyap learned that in 85 percent of kidnappings there are no ransom calls and the abductions are vendetta-based.
  • For a scene in which his character is taken into police remand, actor Vineet Kumar Singh was slapped more than fifty times for real, his hands cuffed and tied to a roof, because Anurag Kashyap wanted a realistic reconstruction of Indian police methods.
  • Anshika Shrivastava, the child actress playing Kali, was unaware of the story, and Anurag Kashyap asked her parents not to show her the film because he felt she was too young for its subject matter.
  • Tejaswini Kolhapure, cast as an alcoholic mother, actually consumed alcohol while shooting; Kashyap felt she knew what happens when someone makes bad choices in life, since her first film, his Paanch, was never released.
  • Kashyap filed a petition against India's Cigarettes and Tobacco Products Act, which forces filmmakers to crop or mask tobacco use, and the Bombay High Court refused him any concessions, delaying the film's release.
  • Because Mumbai's crowds made the suburban locations hard to shoot, the team used hidden cameras for most of the original scenes, including those at Bandra and Lonavala railway station, leaving the actors without the usual retakes.
  • Kashyap said Ugly grew out of his own broken marriage and his relationship with his daughter, and that his guilt at not spending enough time with her when he was an alcoholic shaped the film. Its first ten minutes stem from his personal experience.
