Plot summary
Percy Talbott comes to the small town of Gilead, Maine, after five years in prison, hoping to start over. Hannah Ferguson gives her a job waiting tables at the Spitfire Grill, where the regulars eye her with suspicion. Hannah's nephew Nahum criticizes Percy and digs into her past, while his wife Shelby offers kindness and becomes one of Percy's few friends. When Hannah is injured in a fall, she puts Percy in charge of the Grill. Percy has little cooking experience, so Shelby pitches in. Joe, a young man in town, takes an interest in Percy and begins spending time with her.
