Plot summary
Tzod, high priestess of the jungle swamp Bastal, climbs a snow-covered mountain and reaches a peak where a giant skull holds the Guardian of the Bloom, a mystic flower. The Guardian tries to drive her away, but Tzod shows an identical bloom and begins the tale of how it came to shape the world below. Her account follows Ghal-Sur, a renegade scholar jailed with her by a young tyrant. Tzod uses the Bloom to free them, and the flower's power fuels a long struggle for control. Across centuries, the Bloom passes through the hands of rulers and fanatics, inspiring corruption, greed, and tyranny. The Guardian hears how one spore from the Bloom set off a chain of violence and conquest.

- The hand-animation for The Spine of Night took seven years, and weeks before its South by Southwest premiere the whole film was nearly lost when Morgan Galen King's Microsoft Windows system auto-updated while he slept.
- The Spine of Night's rotoscope drawings were made on computers but classically at 12 frames per second, as usual for the technique, with artists hand-drawing over live-action footage frame by frame.
