Plot summary
The theft of a plutonium shipment in the United States gives renegade KGB agents the material for a nuclear device, which they plant in the Ghawar Oil Field in Saudi Arabia. They threaten to set it off, which would poison a large part of the world's oil reserve, and they demand that Israel give up its West Bank settlements. In Washington, the President, who does not know who is behind the threat, contemplates a war with Israel and orders the CIA to identify the culprits and stop them. The agency turns to a covert operative, The Soldier, who works outside its normal channels. The Russian agent Dracha tries to kill him in the Austrian Alps, and in West Berlin he reaches the CIA director. He and his team join with Mossad, whose director of covert operations is Susan Goodman.
