Plot summary
Billy and his mother have moved into the house where James once built the original snowman. Billy's own dog has recently died, so near Christmas he draws a picture for Father Christmas and asks for another dog. When a loose floorboard gives way in his bedroom, he finds toys hidden below it and a little box bound with tinsel. Inside are a photo of James with the snowman, an old scarf and hat, lumps of coal and a dried tangerine. Snow falls, and Billy builds the same snowman, using what is left over for a snowdog. At midnight the two come to life.

- The composer Howard Blake, who scored the 1982 original, was one of the few crew members not asked to return for the sequel; after he expressed interest, he was asked to send a demo and refused, citing the success of the original orchestral score.
- The Snowman and the Snowdog took nearly two years to complete and, like the 1982 original, was created from over 200,000 hand-drawn images. CGI was used to add digital falling snow and lighting effects.
- Raymond Briggs, who owns the rights to the original Snowman characters and premise, said "it took a lot of persuasion to allow the sequel to be made," and the sequel could not have happened without his permission.
- Public art trails of outsize Snowdogs and smaller Snowpups have appeared in Newcastle and Tyne and Wear, Brighton and Hove, Cardiff and Ashford; after each exhibition the Snowdogs are auctioned to raise money for local hospices.
