Plot summary
Mark Kerr comes out of Olympic wrestling and into no holds barred competition, where he becomes the dominant heavyweight of his era and earns the nickname The Smashing Machine. A tournament in São Paulo brings him wider attention, followed by a stretch in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and then a move to Japan with the Pride Fighting Championships, where he fights in front of crowds of around 50,000. His shoulder and knee trouble him and he carries a black eye, and he comes to rely on painkillers. Outside the ring his girlfriend Dawn is part of his life, and a former rival from his amateur wrestling days works as his mentor.
