Big break
Rutten earned a spot with Pancrase after he knocked out the RINGS champion in sparring. The new "hybrid wrestling" organization was being scouted for fighters in the Netherlands in 1993 by Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki.
A role that slipped away
Rutten was first set to fight Randy Couture for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, but Couture signed with another promotion after a contract dispute, so the title match did not happen.
Getting ready for a role
In 2002, Rutten made his New Japan Pro-Wrestling debut with Antonio Inoki's MMA army. Ahead of his first match, vignettes showed him studying Keiji Mutoh tapes to pick up the shining wizard for NJPW wrestling.
Own stunts
Rutten did motion capture work for the main character's fighting moves in Grand Theft Auto IV. He asked how violent to make it, was told to give it all he had, and after two hours the team stopped him.
A change of course
Rutten served as a team coach in 2006 for the International Fight League, an MMA organization built around team combat. The Anacondas, his team, defeated the Silverbacks by a 3-2 score.
