Plot summary
The Hillcrist family has held its estate in an English village for generations. Mr. Hornblower's fortune is newer, and his family was working class before that; he thinks the Hillcrists are snobs. Hornblower buys land on the promise that tenant farmers may stay, then turns them out and builds factories. The Hillcrists learn what happened to ground they had sold him and regret the sale. The countryside next to their estate is going up for auction, and Hornblower taunts them with his intention to buy it. His agent outbids them.
